Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that begins tonight at sundown. This holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE.
The Hanukkah menorah, (Hanukkiah) holds nine candles. In the center stands the shamash or "attendant". The shamash lights the eight other Hanukkah candles. The Hanukkah candles signify the miracle of the oil that burned for eight nights. They are not to be utilized for any useful or productive purpose such as lighting a fire in the fireplace or other purposes.
While gift-giving is not traditionally a part of the Hanukkah holiday, playing dreidel and enjoying fried foods are traditional during the holiday.
